“There’s no honorable way to kill, no gentle way to destroy. There is nothing good in war except its ending.”- Abraham Lincoln. Mr. Kim Jong Un, supreme leader of North Korea seems to have taken inspiration from Abraham Lincoln words. North Korea a country which officially describes itself as a self-reliant socialist state and formally holds elections, but according to critics, it is regarded as a totalitarian dictatorship. The foreign minister of North Korea Mr.Ri Yong Ho has accused US president Mr. Donald Trump of declaring a “war”. “The whole world should clearly remember, it was the US who first declared war on our country”-Mr. Ho told reporters in UN General Assembly session. As we have already witnessed North Korea aggression, the situation is quite unclear on who wants to declare war, US or North Korea. According to the report of CNN, North Korea has fired 22 missiles during 15 test since February, in fact, Kim Jong Un has tested more missiles than his father and grandfather combined. On 3rd of September 2017, North Korea conducted its sixth nuclear test, which actually formed an artificial earthquake near the nuclear test site. The basic question here is what? What does North Korea want?
In 2001 US president George W.Bush termed North Korea as a “rogue state”. The rogue state is a controversial term applied by international theorists to states they consider threatening the world peace and in the same year, they doubled their efforts to acquire nuclear weapons in order to avoid the fate of Iraq. On October 9th, 2006 North Korea announced it had conducted its nuclear weapons test. From the above scenario, it is clear that the USA has some special interest in those countries which have either oil or nuclear weapons. Well, what happened with Iraq, the world will never forget, especially North Korea. After the demolition of dictator like Saddam Hussein in Iraq and Muammar Qaddafi in Libya, Kim knew that sooner or later they will be next target of USA where USA will land its democratic flags and declaring the country as democratic, claiming that they fight for democracy even though it will be controlled by the USA and frankly speaking, they don’t care about democracy. They just want to rule over every country with oil and nuclear weapons.
Kim believed the only way to save the government and North Korea from the attack of the USA and South Korea is to threaten them with nuclear weapons which actually could travel to a long distance and could prove to be destructive and could theoretically be dropped on the USA, so the North Korean regime ensures its external security.
Another reason for North Korea aggression is to maintain internal security as well. For Kim, the survival of government is equally important as survival of a country. While the country may seem to be unified, it’s not and behind the scenes, there’s a large group of the population who wants to put an end to Kim’s regime. The reason why people are not very fond of Kim is due to his involvement in the killing of his uncle, Jang Song-thaek who was a leading figure in the government and second, the killing of his half-brother in Malaysia in which the involvement of North Korea government was suspected.
One more reason could be, is to improve its status quo. The North Korea budget today is made up largely by Chinese and Russian loans. In order to make North Korea economically sustainable and to increase investments in its military funds, Kim needs international legitimacy and relief from western sanctions that he can only get through crisis induced diplomacy.
As a whole North Korea and Kim knows that neither they have number nor they have the technology to defeat the USA if a war occurs. For them, it is simple, for their existence total war is unlikely, but neither total peace.
